Collection: Andrea di Bartolo
Master of the Sienese School and luminous late medieval devotion
Active in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, Andrea di Bartolo was a defining figure of the Sienese School, carrying forward the lyrical elegance and spiritual intensity of the Tuscan Gothic tradition. Working in the wake of Duccio and Simone Martini, his practice was characterized by a meticulous devotion to tempera and gold-ground panel painting, creating sacred narratives that bridged medieval mysticism and early Renaissance humanism.
His stylistic signature lies in his highly refined draftsmanship, delicate figural elongation, and sophisticated use of decorative punchwork. Di Bartolo’s compositions are celebrated for their rhythmic drapery, rich lapis lazuli and vermilion pigments, and an ethereal, flattened perspective that prioritizes contemplative grace over strict naturalism.
The surviving body of his work consists primarily of devotional polyptychs and intimate panels designed for personal contemplation. Each piece stands as a testament to the rigorous craftsmanship of the medieval guild system, where the application of gold leaf and burnished gesso transformed sacred imagery into objects of transcendent beauty.
